A MUST READ.
Nigeria is a great country. We have all the human and natural resources to rule the world but we have many leaders who are devoid of ideas.
Let us talk about AGRICULTURE, because OIL is dead. Unfortunately Nigeria depends heavily on the oil industry for her budgetary revenues, but we can't take away the fact that Nigeria is predominantly still an Agricultural society. Approximately 70% of the population engage in AGRICULTURAL production at a subsistence level but we still import a lot of food for our survival. The groundnut association of Nigeria has 900,000 members, rice association of Nigeria has 12 million members. And we still de import rice? It’s indeed a national shame.
Factually speaking, when food production can not keep the pace with its increasing population, food would have to be imported. That is exactly our situation in Nigeria.
Nigeria has 350,000 km2 Arable land which is about 40% of our entire land as a nation. If converted to hectares about 30 million hectares of Farmable land. The sad news is that we are not utilizing up to 25% of our arable land.
Our young graduates are all looking for white collar jobs, they don’t want to dirty their hands whereas that is were the real gold mine lies. On a yearly basis over 300 thousand graduates are released into the over saturated labour market. That simply means every year things get worse.
Our nation Nigeria has a population of over 170 million people, with less than 50 thousand tractors. Are we serious at all? Is our government ok? India as at 2013 had 619,000 Tractors, even a small community in India has over 2,000 Tractors. The work one tractor will do in a day is what 215 people will do in one day. We only take pride in consuming and not producing, we have more G- Wagons in Nigeria that the entire Europe. We fail to understand that the idea is not to look rich the idea is to be rich. Are we rich as a nation?
WHAT IS THE WAY FORWARD?
What we need is a clear strategic vision and a shift in mind set.
We need to look at agriculture with the right lens
All this year’s we have taken agriculture as a developmental activity, like a social sector. But Agriculture is not a social sector. Agriculture is a business.
Agriculture needs to be done in a modernized way that is productive and competitive.
We must now look into greenhouse farming to grow our foods and vegetables
Every one can own a greenhouse, that means everyone can make money.
The bigger your greenhouse the bigger your income.
Let me give you a comprehensive summary of the turn over of a GH farm.
An 8 by 20 miter greenhouse cost N1.5m
With 400 tomatoe plant population.
At harvest a plant produces a minimum of 10kg multiply by 400 plant stand that is 4,000kg of tomatoes being harvested within 4 months harvesting period.
A kg of greenhouse tomatoes in shoprite sells for about N1,500
Let’s say you sell to supermarkets for N500/per kg multiplied by 4000kg . Your income is 2 million Naria. Just within 7 months of the whole farming circle.
No body in this Nation have a reason to be poor. Poverty is a decision, if you decide to work out of poverty in to wealth it is possible. No matter how little the space you have, you can make money from it.
AGRICULTURE IS THE FUTURE OF NIGERIA.
